“I want to burn with the spirit of the times. I want all servants of the stage to recognize their lofty destiny. I am disturbed at my comrades’ failure to rise above narrow caste interests which are alien to the interests of society at large. Yes, the theatre can play an enormous part in the transformation of the whole of existence.”

I am a multicultural multidisciplinary artist creating work at the intersection of visual art, live performance, and civic engagement. I grew up in the former Soviet Union at a time when explicit commentary or criticism on society through verbal means in performance was taboo, and theatre artists behind the Iron Curtain instead expressed their socio-political messages through the use of visuals.

I stand on the shoulders of the great artists of that time, and although the political conditions and theatrical climate have transformed dramatically since then, I am convinced that the use of visual storytelling as a means of expression remains essential in today’s politically and socially engaged theatre.

In my work I explore new paradigms in visually driven performance,  and investigate how to weave nonverbal performance elements with socio-political issues in order to create performances that awe the audience while simultaneously encourage reflection and provoke a generative dialogue.
