Part art installation, part immersive theater, A Dozen Dreams, produced by En Garde Arts and co-created by Anne Hamburger, John Eisner and myself, invited the spectators on a visual-audio journey through a labyrinth-like environment of dreams and reflections on the global pandemic and the societal reckonings of 2020 by twelve NYC female playwrights.

I physicalized the dreams into a dozen of expressive environments linked together in a serpentine dreamscape which took over a 4,500 square foot retail space within the Brookfield Place luxurious mall, along with parts of its spacious Winter Garden lobby.

A Dozen Dreams was a piece of its time, not only in terms of its content but also the form: it questioned the idea that a relation of co-presence between live actors and spectators is a fundamental aspect of live theatre and performance. By going beyond the expectation of a traditional performer-audience co-presence we offered spectators an immersion within their surrounding environments, challenging the canonical views on presence, acting and spectating.

Press

“this ambitious project uses the notion of “dreams” – both as in aspirational longings, as well as that surreal land we visit in our sleep – to reflect on the irrevocable effects of the pandemic and the societal reckonings of the past year.”

-Adrian Dimanlig, Interludes

“The piece truly transports you into the minds of the 12 playwrights that have been commissioned to muse on the idea of dream.”

– Brittany Crowell, Front Row Center

“A dozen New York City–based women playwrights share their pandemic dreams, both actual and imagined, in En Garde Arts’ brilliant A Dozen Dreams….you’re likely to want to stay in several of the rooms and further immerse yourself in their familiarity and sense of wonder”

-Mark Rifkin, This Week In New York

“The talented women behind “A Dozen Dreams” can capture just a sliver of those emotions is no small accomplishment. Last year I learned how a room can come to represent utter isolation. In this production I learned how a room can represent any time or place — the limitless reach of our imagination.”

-Maya Phillips, New York Times
