The Gaaga
Environmental and Projection Designer
The Gaaga, a captivating site-specific phantasmagoria by renowned Ukrainian playwright and director Sasha Denisova, takes the audience on a daring trial of Putin and his associates, all seen through the innocent eyes of a young Ukrainian girl. Drawing inspiration from real-world events and insightful interviews with refugees and officials, this darkly humorous and haunting production delves into the profound repercussions of war.
I transformed the renowned Beat Brew Hall located in Harvard Square into a bomb shelter, where the audience was warmly welcomed to charge their devices and savor tea while being confronted with harrowing news footage of the appalling war crimes in Ukraine. The environment immersed the audience in the young protagonist’s imagination, compelling them to witness events from the young protagonist’s perspective, where they’d encounter a peculiar, dark, and phantasmagoric environment that blended elements from Alice in Wonderland, David Lynch’s surrealism, children’s dreams, and the harsh realities of war.
“ Irina Kruzhilina’s environmental design begins the immersive experience from the moment you walk down the stairs and see the windows leading into the basement space covered with cardboard boxes. It’s unsettling how much it feels like walking into a bomb shelter, gawking at someone else’s tragedy while embodying how easily it could be your own.”

“The Gaaga” found its mode of expression in surrealism, according to Kruzhilina, who wanted audiences to feel in the bomb shelter the sense of dislocation of someone actually seeking such refuge. “We imagine ourselves inside of a dream,” the designer said of the setting, strewn with what looks like the detritus of an abandoned civilization — everything from a bathtub to a doll’s house.
